Issues

When it comes to communication and engagement, every issue has its own unique set of opportunities and obstacles.

Sustainable Food Systems

The Problem

In order to build public and legislative support for reform, advocates have been working to identify concepts and language to successfully convey a more compelling vision for a sustainable food system. Our own research has identified clarifying and compelling ways of having conversations about tricky topics like CAFOs and nitrogen pollution, and even how to have more constructive conversations with farmers about the use of chemical inputs.

The Solution

In order to build public and legislative support for reform, advocates have been working to identify concepts and language to successfully convey a more compelling vision for a sustainable food system. Our own research work on the issue has ranged from clarifying the various cognitive obstacles to understanding, to introducing a new concept like “food system” into public discourse as well as more focused questions such as to what language to use when talking about CAFOs or nitrogen pollution.

For nearly a decade, the Topos founders have conducted pioneering research about public understandings of sustainability, especially sustainable food systems.
