When it comes to communication and engagement, every issue has its own unique set of opportunities and obstacles.

The Problem

Americans have not only lost confidence in government’s ability to act effectively and solve problems, the problem goes much deeper. They no longer see government as representative. They don’t feel like citizens in a democracy, but like subjects in some other kind of society altogether. In this context, it is harder than ever to engage support for public policy solutions.

The Solution

An extensive national research project, plus deep dives in six particular states, and special attention to people of color and millennials, finds that we can reengage people by not only reminding them of how public institutions are foundations of our wellbeing, but by offering them a vivid picture of how democratic participation works, and can achieve results – particularly when citizens don’t stop with just voting, but take a step or two beyond that to make a difference.
